Many of you will know that for the last five years our friends Paul Mott, Colin Lyall and team mates (AKA “The Sandblasters”), have been taking part in a series of desert ultramarathons to raise money for Small Steps. So far with the continued generosity of thier supporters, the guys have raised an incredible £403,000, making a huge difference to the service that we at Small Steps are able to offer.
In May, both Paul and Colin signed up to run the ‘Wadi Rum’ in Jordan, another gruelling multi-marathon. Sadly Paul suffered an injury just before the race and was unable to compete. However Colin went ahead to take part in this 6 day, 250 kilometer self-supporting endurance race.
We are so proud of Colin who successfully completed the race on 19th May, which is an absolutely amazing achievement. Everyone at Small Steps is full of admiration! After the race Colin said “I can’t think of words to describe it. It’s probably the most grueling, challenging, difficult and rewarding thing I’ve ever done. And the pain is very quickly forgotten.”
The event requires a great amount of dedication with regards to training and certainly puts competitors physical and mental stamina to the test. With up to 15kg on their backs, they will experience mid-day temperatures of up to 40 degrees whilst trying to navigate across uneven rocky, stony ground as well as climbing some of the largest sand dunes and mountains in Jordan.
You can still support Paul and Colin in their fundraising for Small Steps with a donation of any size. To make a donation please visit their JustGiving page.
